Frequently Asked Questions
“ How do world markets affect the price of durum?”
“ Canada largely influences world values for durum. However, when North Africa has a large crop, there is less global demand and a lower price for us.”
Canada represents close to 50 per cent of the exportable surplus of durum. This means we have a lot of influence on world values. The other major factor is the North African crop. When North Africa has a large production, there is less global demand for durum and, as a result, a lower price for us. Conversely, if production is low, demand increases along with our prices.
